1st/2nd Grade 4-19-15

Dear First and Second Grade Families:

In honor of Israel’s 67th birthday this Thursday (April 23), we spent our morning learning about and celebrating the State of Israel. After looking at some past and present day photos of Israel, we learned that:

  • Israel has a huge variety of topographical features ranging from forested highlands and fertile green valleys to mountainous deserts.

  • Since its establishment in 1948, Israel has become a very advanced nation with lots of people, contemporary buildings and modern technology.

  • While there is a lot to see and do in Israel, its most popular site of attraction is the Western Wall. The wall is located in the Old City of Jerusalem and has been a site for Jewish prayer and pilgrimage for centuries, the earliest source mentioning Jewish attachment to the site dating from the 4th century. Jerusalem is also a very important place for Muslims and Christians, which makes the city so unique and special.

Each child made an amazing mixed-media cityscape of Jerusalem, the city of Gold, that is worthy of framing. Please ask your child to show you what s/he made in class and to tell you one or two thing(s) s/he learned about Jerusalem and/or the State of Israel.

Shavua tov,

Nia Taylor
